The Welkom-based Matjhabeng Local Municipality has spent millions on its service delivery fleet since the appointment of the current mayor, Thanduxolo Khalipha, in 2021.

Yesterday, Khalipha unveiled a newly bought Grader worth R4 million to enhance services in Matjhabeng, such as maintaining road infrastructure. This after he unveiled fire trucks which cost over R6 million earlier this month.

Municipal spokesperson Tshediso Tlali said since the new administration, the municipality has spent over R100 million on a new fleet. He explained that more than 68 municipal fleets, including tipper trucks, TLBs, Front-end Loaders, Cherry Pickers, Tractors, Agri Tech, Trailers, Compactor Trucks and bakkies have been bought to enhance service delivery in Matjhabeng.

ANC Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula, recently applauded Khalipha for coming up with a turnaround strategy to improve services in Matjhabeng and further questioned the work that his predecessors did.

Meanwhile, Tlali said Khalipha has explained how the procurement of the Grader will assist in grading the gravel streets in Matjhabeng while awaiting the resealing and paving of all streets in the area for the next financial year.

Tlali further adds that the move is in line with the mayor's and his team's commitment to improve services and invest in infrastructure to allow economic growth in Matjhabeng.
