Municipal workers disrupt city after non-payment of salaries─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 15:29 Wed, 29 Mar 2023
Members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) and the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (Imatu) have disrupted Bloemfontein after the Mangaung Metro Municipality failed to pay their salaries.
The regional chairperson of Samwu, Jimmy Motse, says some workers have received a portion of their salaries, while others have received nothing.
Municipal workers usually receive their salaries two days before the end of the month; however, this has not happened to some workers, and no communication has allegedly been offered to them.
This will not be the first time the municipality is late with employees’ salaries. It is understood that the protest began earlier on Wednesday (29/3) at Charles Street in the city and moved over to the municipality’s headquarters. An enquiry has been sent to the municipality for comment.
