Arson suspected after fire at Taung Mall─── 06:03 Thu, 23 Mar 2023
Chief Whip of the North West Provincial Legislature, Lazzy Mokgori, expressed concern about possible arson after a fire gutted parts of Taung Mall, calling it a major setback for the over 100 villages surrounding Taung.
The management of Taung Mall confirmed that a fire broke out between 19:30 and 21:30 on Tuesday 21 March 2023.
"Due to the swift response of the Taung fire brigade, the police, and other responders, the fire was contained to only one section of the building (OK Furnishers and Autozone). No one was hurt or had to be treated for any injuries."
Mokgosi urged residents to assist the police in their investigations. He further commended the police for maintaining high visibility and arresting 59 suspects alleged to have been responsible for looting and other acts of lawlessness across the province during this week's national shutdown.
"We call on law enforcement to leave no stone unturned until those who might be responsible for this treacherous act are behind bars and held accountable," said Mokgosi.
He described the possible opportunistic targeting of an economic nodal point that provides jobs and serves communities within the Greater Taung municipality as "an unforgivable and atrocious act".
