Power to parts of Bloemfontein will only be restored later today, says Centlec's spokesperson, Lele Mamatu.

Residents of the Free State capital were left in darkness on Monday night after a power outage affected the whole city.

Mamatu says the power outage was caused by an equipment failure as a result of a system fault at the Havard substation in Bloemfontein and that Centlec employees worked tirelessly through the night to ensure the fault was cleared and power restored.

He apologised to residents for the inconvenience caused by the outage.

The spokesperson for the Department of Health in the Free State, Mondli Mvambi, confirmed that services were not disrupted during the power outage as safety measures were already in place to ensure that patients lives were not at risk.

"As soon as the power outage was experienced, the generators kicked in at all affected hospitals and clinics. Effectively all public health facilities in Bloemfontein that provide services on a 24-hour basis now have generators to keep service delivery going," he said.

Mamatu told OFM News that while areas in Bloemfontein remain without electricity, he is hopeful power will be fully restored by the end of the business day.
