Irate Free State residents of Kutlwanong, Odendaalsrus, are demanding to be employed by the mines.
According to Free State police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, residents went on a rampage and barricaded some roads with burning tyres at Kutloanong, demanding to be employed by the mine.
He explained that the protest took place late on Sunday 12 March 2023 until early this morning at about 03:00. Thakeng added that no shop was looted and no one was arrested during the protest. However, police have registered a case of public violence for further investigation.
At the moment, members of the Welkom Public Order Policing and Odendaalsrus Visible Policing are on site to ensure that law and order are maintained. Meanwhile, Thakeng added that relevant stakeholders were consulted to address the residents demanding employment in the mining environment.
