World's 'oldest person' dies in North West at age 128─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 06:03 Thu, 09 Mar 2023
A woman in North West, believed to be one of the oldest persons in the world, passed away last week. Johanna Mazibuko, from Jouberton, Klerksdorp, was 128 years old.
She was born on a maize farm in the Ottosdal district and had documents proving she was born on 11 May 1894. Her age was never verified though.
The mayor of the Matsosana Municipality, James Tsolela, said the municipality is saddened by the passing of Mazibuko, whom they believe was one of the oldest people in the world.
He said the municipality has tried to assist the elderly woman since they knew about her, and they have also hosted a couple of parties for her so that she feels part of society.
The municipality has lowered its flag in honour of the late Mazibuko.
In a message of condolence, Tsosela called on her family and friends to accept that Mazibuko, who has lived for quite a long time, has passed on being a happy person.
"We wish them well during this time; we know it is not easy. Normally, when there are such incidents, families break apart. We want to encourage them to unite and give the old lady the befitting funeral she deserves. May God bless her; may her soul rest in peace and rise in glory."
Despite not remembering much, at her 128th birthday celebration last year, Mazibuko told News24 that she was married to Stawana Mazibuko after his wife passed away.

"I was married to an older man. His first wife had died. He was an independent man. He had a horse carriage and cows. I would milk the cows and make butter to sell. That man treated me very well and made me forget about my life before him. I did not want for anything."
The couple had seven children, of whom two are still alive. Her 75-year-old sister, Elisa Baaitsane Wesinyana, said that when she was born, Mazibuko was already married.
