Nehawu members bring Free State hospital to a standstill─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 09:29 Mon, 06 Mar 2023
Members of the National Education, Health, and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) have brought the Manapo Hospital in Qwaqwa, Free State, to a standstill.
The spokesperson for the Public Servants Association (PSA), Lynsie Pelser, said they have been informed that people whose shifts finish in the morning are unable to leave and those who are supposed to start working, are unable to gain access to the hospital.
She said this has also affected surgeries as patients cannot enter the hospital. It seems this demonstration at the Manapo Hospital by Nehawu members is part of a nationwide strike.
It is, however, understood that the strike has continued despite the Department of Public Service and Administration interdicting it. It has been explained that the department offered a 4.7% salary increase, while unions are asking for between 10% and 12%.
One of the staff members at the hospital said she arrived at the hospital at 06:30, and has not been able to gain access since. “At the moment, Nehawu members are still blocking the main gate into the hospital, which has made it difficult for patients to get help,” she explained.
It is understood that patients have since left the hospital as they are not getting any assistance. No-one has communicated any arrangements with them. The nurse added the police are at the hospital, however, nothing is being done. The protesting members are still blocking the entrance.
The province’s foremost trauma hospital, the Pelonomi Hospital, has also been brought to a standstill by Nehawu members.
This is a developing story.
