Taps dry in small Free State town─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 15:17 Mon, 27 Feb 2023
Residents of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in the Free State have been without water for over a week.
According to the spokesperson of Masilonyana, Zongezile Ntjhwabule, water challenges experienced in the area came after it was discovered that the existing Variable Speed Drive (VSD) which powers the motor, is damaged and needs a replacement.
He added that the municipality is in the process of procuring a replacement VSD and once the VSD is procured and installed, the municipality will be able to restore the water supply.
Ntjwabule said the municipality has since been sending trucks to supply residents with water. He added on Sunday water trucks were sent to Phahameng, Nomzamo, Reakgathalla, Marantha Ipeleng, Community Hall and Slovo Park. He added that Tshwaraganang, Phathakahle, the NG Kerk and others will be targeted on Monday.
"This morning, because it's a school day, all the schools have been supplied with water because most of the schools in this area have JOJO tanks. I can confirm that there is no school that has been affected adversely so there are no children that are running on the streets because of water shortages. We are also focusing on crèches, daycare centres, and other key centres where our communities are," he said.
Ntjhwabule appealed for residents to be patient while the municipality is doing all it can to restore water.
