As part of leading a healthy lifestyle, the North West Department of Education has called on parents to encourage children to take part in sports.

The departmental spokesperson, Elias Malindi, said the participation in physical activities, such as athletics, will enable learners to be in a good physical state and also to shape their minds, attitude and moods. He added that when learners exercise they are able to understand easily when they are taught by their teachers. Malindi says learners' first activity in the school enrichment calendar this year is athletics.

“I take this moment to encourage our learners to participate in athletics and sport in general. Sports will be able to take learners away from substance abuse and other social challenges like bullying, teenage pregnancy, crime, etc. As the saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," he said.

Meanwhile, the North West MEC Viola Mostumi pleaded with parents to allow and ensure learners take part in sports. Motsumi stated that she will soon launch Wednesday school sports in the Bojanala District and other districts will follow suit. Different schools have already started competing in athletics at school level and this will proceed to cluster level, followed by sub-district level and the best teams will participate at national level.
