ANC MP due in court for murder | News Article

An ANC Member of Parliament will on Monday 23 January 2023 appear in a North West court to face charges of murder, amongst other.

The 34-year-old MP will appear for the first time at the Orkney Magistrate's Court near Kanana, outside Klerksdorp. The former Dr Kenneth Kaunda ANC Youth League regional secretary was arrested on Friday, 20 January 2023, nearly two months after the murder of his 31-year-old wife and mother of two.

The deceased, who was also a member of the party, was allegedly stabbed to death in November 2022 at her place of residence in Kanana. The deceased apparently shared a series of messages speaking about gender-based violence before her death. In a Facebook post she allegedly mentioned that, " GBV is real, if I wake up killed or any of my family members, please don't look far." Members of the ANC Women's League are set to protest outside the local magistrate court in Orkney against the release of the suspect from bail.

The ANC Women League's provincial convenor, Bitsa Lenkopane, said the murder is a painful reminder of the prevalence of gender-based violence and femicide that many women and children still face.

The spokesperson of the ANCYL, Kutkwano Mothusi, said the organisation condemns in the strongest terms possible the murder of women and children.

The former Chairperson of Dr Kenneth Kaunda ANCYL Mandla Tawana says the suspect's actions placed his comrades in a corner and the organisation in shame.

"After reading all the media statements of both the ANCYL and ANCWL, I could sense disbelief and disappointment. One could detect that it wasn't easy for comrades to issue statements but they are duty-bound to lead the society. Now all of us are guilty by association," Tawana further adds.
