Deputy minister Maggy Sotyu, who spoke on the sidelines of an event at the Boaramelo Combined School in Jagersfontein on Tuesday 18 January 2023, said the report is not yet done and work still continues.

She said the two departments are amongst those that were sanctioned by President Cyril Ramaphosa, following the disaster which claimed the lives of two people and left over 200 families displaced, and more than 100 houses damaged. One victim is still missing.

Sotyu said the two departments are also working together with the Provincial Government of the Free State.

"I think it will be released at the right time and maybe we can be told what it is that we can we do. You saw that there were also some houses which were affected and we, as the department, work with the Department of Human Settlements. They play their part with regard to housing. We also play our part with some of the things that affect my department," Sotyu added.

On Friday 16 September 2022, the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy visited the affected areas, including Itumeleng and Charlesville.

The visit by the committee members, accompanied by Premier Sisi Ntombela, followed after the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, President Cyril Ramaphosa, and different provincial MECs - including Mxolisi Dukwana - also made a turn at the town.

"There has been extensive damage, I saw with my own eyes. I saw a lot of damaged cars and saw how the mudslide travelled across the area and damaged houses and infrastructure. I saw that some of the houses were swept away by this mudslide.

"We are saddened about the loss of life and those who ended up in the hospital due to injuries sustained during the incident. I was at the hospital and I saw a couple of them who got injured, this is really sad," Ramaphosa said.

In 2022, the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, David Mahlobo, accompanied by local mayor of the Trompsburg-based Kopanong Local Municipality, opened a criminal case against the Jagersfontein Mine.
