Free State woman scammed by bogus boyfriend─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 12:42 Fri, 13 Jan 2023
The Free State Police have launched a search for a foreign national man who allegedly scammed his girlfriend out of over half a million rand.
Provincial police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, says the 59-year-old victim met the suspect at a crèche in Riebeeckstad, Welkom, on 25 May 2021.
According to Thakeng, the two dated shortly after the woman proposed to the suspect, who introduced himself as Sthembiso Masango from Kwazulu-Natal and worked as a property agent. Thakeng adds that while they were dating, Masango took care of the victim's needs, including buying her clothes and other financial needs.
Thakeng adds that on 7 June 2021, the suspect introduced the victim to ancestors who encouraged her to resign from her government position and bring all her pension money so that she can become R8 million richer. The victim did as instructed and placed her money inside what they call a "money box". After she brought the money, the bogus boyfriend disappeared.
Thakeng says the 59-year-old woman lost R647 000.
He explains that the suspect at the time was travelling with a silver X5 BMW with registration number JP 90 JT GP and a white Porsche with registration number SALIMAX GP. The suspect is also known as DJ Salimax, who organises gigs throughout South Africa. The suspect also frequents places such as Klerksdorp, Kanana, and Johannesburg.
Thakeng requests anyone with information that will assist in tracing the suspect to contact Detective Constable Neo Motheke at 064 039 6968 or Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
