MEC to meet with management of Free State resort over racism allegations─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 12:51 Mon, 26 Dec 2022
The MEC of the Department of Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (Destea) has called an urgent meeting with the management of a well-known resort and conference centre in the Free State.
The urgent meeting comes after a video went viral on Christmas Day with allegations that there is a swimming pool at Maselspoort reserved for white people only.
MEC Makalo Mohale says the meeting with the management is to gather all the facts. He is also hoping to get in touch with the victims.
The video in question shows two black teenage boys in a fight with a number of older white men.
The person who posted the video makes the allegations in the caption that her brothers (the two black teenage boys) were attacked because they are apparently not allowed in the swimming pool as it is reserved for white people.
Mohale says Destea will follow up with the management of the South African Police Service (SAPS) on the case to ensure that the victims' concerns are attended to.
“I strongly condemn these senseless acts of racism at all costs. This unwanted behaviour should never be entertained in whatever form, but to be treated as a matter of urgency,” he adds.
Mohale continues to explain that the incident has been identified as one element that remains a threat to the revival of the tourism sector. Therefore, he urges communities to report any incident of racism to law enforcement agencies and continue to play a role in assisting the police in ensuring that perpetrators are brought to book.
“Moreover, I strongly encourage both domestic and international tourists to continue visiting the Free State as their preferred destination of choice.
"The department will continue to monitor the situation so as to ensure that such incidents don’t happen anywhere in the province,” he concludes.
Maselspoort was sent a media enquiry for comment.
