Midvaal Municipality ends 2022 on a high note─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 12:56 Wed, 07 Dec 2022
The people of the Midvaal Local Municipality, which is based in the southern parts of Gauteng, will be addressed by the executive mayor, Peter Teixeira, on the highs and lows of 2022.
The municipality, which is reportedly the best-performing municipality in Gauteng and was rated the most financially sustainable municipality in the country by Ratings Afrika - will also celebrate its successes, including its track record of good governance and providing excellent service delivery to the area on Wednesday 7 December 2022.
Teixeira said when he first took office, he and the new administration team had to focus on filling the vital vacancies within the municipality, these being the Municipal Manager and Heads to head different departments; which they have done successfully. The main drive now is to take the municipality to the next level. “Our municipality is mostly known for its excellent service delivery and as the new administration, we aimed to bring some innovation in the way we deliver services to our people. We always aimed to bring services to people in a more effective way and continue improving their lives in the best possible way we can,” he explained.
Looking at their proudest achievements for the year, he stated that they have received a clean audit from the Auditor-General for the ninth consecutive year – they will make an official announcement during mid-January of 2023. Another major achievement, according to Teixeira, is being able to electrify around 1800 houses just in time for Christmas. “It gives me so much joy knowing that residents will this year celebrate Christmas with lights in their homes after not having electricity for so many years.”
Where goals are set, challenges usually arise. He explained that the slow rate of their budget expenditure is one of the challenges they faced. He also believes that the weather conditions have not been favourable towards them because the more it rained, the more potholes developed and the grass grew longer. “Now for the potholes to be repaired and the grass to be cut, the weather also has to allow for people to do the job – but overall, we did our best to overcome those challenges with the best solutions that were at hand.”
He added that there is not a lot that they aimed to achieve and could not, 90% of the things that were on their agenda have been achieved, and those that were not achieved were mainly influenced by the grants that they receive from provincial and national government.
“We have exciting stuff for 2023, there will be different projects that will be coming into play,” said Teixera. He concluded that he wishes the community of Midvaal a safe festive season.
