The government has issued a flood alert for the Vaal following heavy rain and rising dam levels.
Over the weekend, floodgates at various dams had to be opened as they were overflowing.
The Water and Sanitation Department is urging residents to be vigilant.
"We've retained those sluice gates at the Vaal because the inflows are still quite high and therefore the issue of what happens downstream remains a concern," said spokesperson Sputnik Ratau.
"That is why it is critical that all of us be aware, particularly those communities downstream along the Vaal, that will be affected by the rise of the river's water."
