North West premier, legislature meet with children over social ills─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:04 Sat, 24 Sep 2022
Children aged 12 from across four districts in North West will on Saturday 24 September meet at the Provincial Legislature for a session looking into social ills mainly affecting young people.
According to the provincial government's spokesperson, Brian Setswambung ,the office of Premier Bushy Maape, in partnership with the Provincial Legislature, will host a Provincial Children’s Parliament under the theme “Maximising the voices of children in addressing social ills affecting them”.
He says the sitting serves as a platform for children to engage with the provincial leadership and make known their challenges to them.
Setswambung says this session will address challenges facing children, particularly those regarding alcohol and drug abuse and teenage pregnancy.
“Children’s Parliament was established to celebrate the values, principles and commitment of the former President Nelson Mandela to South African children, by affording those opportunities to participate and directly influence decisions made on their behalf.
"It serves as a platform for children to engage with the provincial leadership and make known their challenges to them. The initiative is also meant to empower children and enable them to participate in the policy-making and legislative processes of the country.
"Furthermore, the aim is to heighten advocacy around children’s rights and responsibilities as well as affording them the opportunity to be part of the problem-solving processes in the province,” Setswambung adds.
The event will take place from 14h00 – 17h00 in the North West Provincial Legislature.
