Sasol Solar Challenge concludes─── 11:44 Sun, 18 Sep 2022
The Sasol Solar Challenge finally reached its conclusion on Friday 16 September 2022.
After eight days the challenge finished at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, in the Western Cape.
The Tshwane University of Technology Solar Team was the first local team to cross the finish line and third overall. The total distance covered by the TUT solar team was 2 682.4 km.

“We are excited that all the hard work paid off. We increased our kilometres this year and managed to secure first place for local teams, we did encounter challenges during the eight days. The blind stages really set us behind, however, we managed to use them to our advantage,” said the Team manager of TUT Solar Team.
Meanwhile the North West University was the second local team to finish and fourth overall, racking up a total of 2 430.2km.
“Crossing Sir Lowry's Pass was an amazing achievement for us- - being able to drive over it. I think that was our biggest sense of achievement, crossing it without having to stop,” said Wynand Grobler, the spokesperson for the NWU Solar Team.
Despite making placing seventh in the overall challenge and fourth as a local team, the University of the Free State managed to finish the challenge, racking up a total of 521.2 km. The UFS Solar Team also received the Navigation Award.
“The fact that we made it here without any breakages, with the car performing as well as it did, passed expectation, it’s great; it’s really an awesome feeling,” said Hendrik van Heerden, the Team manager of the UFS Solar Team.
A Dutch team from Delft University in the Netherlands, the Brunel Solar team, won the Sasol Solar Challenge again. This, after a week-long battle for first place with the Agoria Solar Team, from Belgium. This is the fourth consecutive victory for the Brunel Solar team.
According to Robert Walker, the owner and director of the Sasol Solar Challenge, they have already started working on the 2024 challenge. This includes planning a new route and also a few improvements that are going to be applied based on what they have learned during this year’s event.
