North West Premier, former ANC IPC convenor fails to make cut─── LUCKY NKUYANE 11:41 Mon, 29 Aug 2022
The current premier of the North West and the ANC’s former interim structure convenor have both failed to make it onto the party’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) additional members' list.
At the conclusion or finalisation of its 9th provincial conference this past weekend, ANC members elected a total of 30 PEC members and the premier, Bushy Maape, and former IPC convener, Hlomane Chauke, failed to make it onto the list.
The party has already elected its top five with former Member of Parliament (MP) Nono Maloyi, as the PEC chairperson. He defeated Maape for the position. Those who made it onto the list, include former MEC for Finance, Wendy Nelson, the Provincial Legislature Speaker, Sussana Dantjie, and the MEC for Treasury, Motlalepula Rosho.
A court application by a group of disgruntled ANC members against the newly elected ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) was dealt a blow in the North West High Court. On Thursday last week, a High Court judge struck the application, which was made on an urgent basis, off the roll.
They dragged the party to court, seeking an order to compel the party to appoint an interim structure in terms of the ANC’s constitution and to also have the ANC’s planned continuation of its 9th Provincial Conference stopped.
On Thursday afternoon, a High Court judge struck the urgent application off the roll, ruling that it was not a matter of urgency.

Earlier, a different group - which included a former Dr Kenneth Kaunda Regional Secretary, Lopang Rothman - took the party to court the night before the conference and successfully changed the voting rights of 20 IPC members, including Chauke.

This weekend the conference went ahead to elect additional PEC members and to also have discussions around the policy position of the party going to December's National Conference.

The newly elected PEC is the first structure to be elected in four years after the previous structure, chaired by former Premier Supra Mahumapelo, was disbanded by the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC). Its disbandment followed after Mahumapelo was asked to step down as the chairperson following sporadic violent protests in cities like Mahikeng and Klerksdorp, among others.
