The national Deputy Minister of Health and the Free State MEC for Health are joining healthcare workers and officials in the awareness march over illegal abortion in Bloemfontein on Thursday.
Deputy Minister Sibongiseni Dhlomo and MEC Montseng Tsiu, flanked by departmental workers and officials, have left the Old Ramkraal Prison and are heading toward the Motheo TVET College.
Once they arrive, Dhlomo and Tsiu are expected to interact and spread a message of wisdom and knowledge with college students over the real dangers of illegal abortions.
The group is marching to highlight issues of illegal abortions, women's health and gender-based violence (GBV) in the Mangaung Metro. Dhlomo is said to have been briefed by Tsiu on local dynamics of health, ahead of the march.
Workers and officials, who are wearing different colours, are marching through the town whilst singing and chanting different messages against the aforementioned issues.
The campaign mainly targets the youth.
The provincial spokesperson of Health, Mondli Mvambi, says the department has also embarked on a sexual reproductive health awareness campaign in Bloemfontein.
He says the event is part of the Department of Health`s ongoing programme targeting young people to raise awareness about the importance of access to health services. He adds that this is spreading the message across young people which targets sexual reproductive health services, including contraceptives because they are key to preventing sexually transmitted infections, unplanned pregnancies, and unsafe terminations of pregnancies.
