Irked residents of the Brandwag flats in the Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro Municipality in the Free State held a protesting march over pressing issues of service delivery.

With the heavy presence of law enforcement agencies, the group marched to the headquarters of the Mangaung Metro to express their grievances. The Brandwag residents’ chief marshal, Motsie Nyane, tells OFM News some of the pressing issues that residents are complaining about, include sewage spillages that the metro has not attended to for a while, the cutting of water supply without speaking to residents, and security that is non-existing at the entrance of the flats. He alleges that the metro has neglected the area for some time and they want that it to change as they want the metro to step up and address challenges in the area.

“Our people are not safe in Brandwag because of many things that are happening in Brandwag. Even the living conditions are not conducive for everyone. The people that we were paying rent to, they just chowed the money and they didn’t pay the municipality for services. We want to pay directly to the municipality,” adds Nyane.

He further added that the residents have not been paying rent at the flats for over two years because of the alleged corruption that has been taking place by the contractor that was in charge of the flats.

In 2018, over 49 families were evicted from their flats after Mangaung metro spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, had said that necessary checks were not been done in a while, and illegal tenants have been staying in the flats.
