Mangaung residents at ease following water supply restoration | News Article

Residents of the Brandwag flats in Mangaung in the Free State are at ease following their water supply restoration after last week’s protests.

OFM News previously reported that disgruntled residents were up in arms on Friday after the metro municipality allegedly interrupted their water supply for three days. The Free State police spokesperson, Wendy Nkabi, previously stated that a number of residents from the Brandwag flats had barricaded the intersection at Nelson Mandela Drive and DF Malherbe Avenue with burning tyres, big stones and an advertisement board before they dispersed on Thursday evening following the arrival of the police. On Friday, residents of the Brandwag flats continued to demonstrate their frustration, with a heavy police presence witnessed around the area.

Residents of the Brandwag flats have confirmed to OFM News that the metro has indeed restored water on Friday evening following interaction with some officials from the metro.

In 2018, tensions were high as some residents were evicted from their flats. This was after one of the residents had told OFM News that the eviction was illegal due to numerous court battles regarding their lease agreement, which resulted in their favour. Over 49 families were previously evicted after Mangaung metro spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, had said that necessary checks were not been done in a while, and illegal tenants have been staying in the flats.

Meanwhile, the fear of eviction is again haunting Brandwag residents after the metro interrupted their water supply for three days last week.

Some residents, who want to remain anonymous, allege that they have been living for free at the flats for the past three years after the municipality did not render any services. This is a developing story.
