Three houses in ashes, a life lost in FS #fires─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 09:32 Mon, 04 Jul 2022
The Matjhabeng Local Municipality has cautioned residents to be mindful of the load-shedding schedule and to avoid leaving appliances on during power interruptions.
Three houses reportedly burned down over the weekend in Welkom in the Free State. It’s alleged that there were no fire trucks available during these fires and that the vehicle that was used to take out the fire was a bakkie that only carries 800 liters of water, usually used for veld fires.
Meanwhile, the Matjhabeng Municipality's spokesperson, Kgojane Matutle, said that the cause of the fire is unknown. It is, however, suspected that it was caused by power interruptions that were caused by load-shedding. He also confirmed that a life was lost during the cause of the incident.
“We are saddened by the incidents and the loss of a life. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fires. The municipality is appealing to the residents to be mindful of load-shedding schedules and to avoid leaving appliances on during power interruptions,” said Matutle.
