Corporate wellbeing with Sapiens@Work | News Article

Are you a business leader? Have you heard of the fifth Industrial Revolution? Even the fourth?

Here's what it means to your business: today, people are forgotten. Machines and computers have taken the place of your workers. People at work today are frustrated, unseen and burnt-out. Or unemployed, bored and unfulfilled. No wonder workers and employees are resigning in droves all over the world. Are you one of those people? Or are you a leader who are faced with unhappy people, a disappearing workforce, and technology that makes people anxious?

Prepare for the fifth industrial revolution

Show your people that you really care. Show them that you understand what it means to employ humans, not just people, but humans. Become an admired leader. A human leader of humans. A leader admired by humans. A leader worthy of following. A leader who understands the human being in corporate wellbeing.

What is the fifth industrial revolution?

To understand the fifth industrial revolution, we have to look at the fourth industrial revolution first. The fourth industrial revolution is characterized by digitization, automation and integration of massive sets of data, leading to the human becoming obsolete, seen as the weakest link and disregarded in favor of efficiency. As a result, people feel dehumanized, forgotten, frustrated and depressed.

Business leaders realize this through the mass exodus mass resignation, mass action and an anxious workforce ready to react to wherever the next blow is going to come from.

The fifth industrial revolution is a correction of the flaws of the fourth industrial revolution where the pendulum swings back in favor of the human. During the fifth industrial revolution, the human is taking centerstage again. The fifth industrial revolution concentrates a whole lot more effort on the human, what it means to be human and how being human can be leveraged to improve results - not just because it is the right thing to do - but because businesses and organizations will reap the benefits of putting people first.

We are currently in the midst of the end of the fourth industrial revolution. The end was ushered in by the pandemic, social revolutions all around the world, economic and financial challenges. The greatest contributor is most likely time. Those humans left behind or out of the loop had lots of time on their hands. time used to think about frustrations and issues related to being dehumanized.

Enter the fifth industrial revolution. Right now we are already seeing signs of the fifth industrial revolution crystallizing in organizations all around the world: humans are being placed at the forefront: positive psychology, psychological safety, work life balance and humanism are all aspects of the work experience that are getting more and more attention.

Businesses can simply not afford to be caught unprepared to cater for the human during this turbulent yet important time in the history of work.

What is executive coaching?

The entire premise of coaching stems from the notion that the answer and solution lies within the client or the coachee. The job of the coach is to facilitate the coachee’s own greatness from within. The coach, therefore, does not necessarily have to be a master of the subject. The coach should be a master of facilitating and co-creating mastery of the coachee’ own knowledge, skills.

The Sapiens@work coaching models are geared towards business leaders and employees, using the I CF principles of coaching. Sapiens@work coaches having been business leaders or coaches of high-performance individuals themselves. These coaches also facilitate the shaping of attitudes, using those aviation human factors facilitation techniques used to shape the attitude in pilots, fighter pilots, air traffic controllers and all other aviation professionals.

What is positive psychology?

Positive psychology differs from clinical psychology in that positive psychology focuses on mental health rather than mental illness. Instead of looking to the past to resolve issues that may have led to mental illness, positive psychology looks towards the future and at scientific methods to help humans not just survive but thrive. Aspects such as a positive attitude, engagement, positive relationships, meaning at work and in life, accomplishment and vitality are addressed. Sapiens@work consultants are trained as positive psychology coaches or positive psychology practitioners at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States of America.

What is aviation human factors facilitation?

Aviation human factors is a combination of several sciences (psychology, social sciences, anthropology, physiology, anatomy, management science, communication and economics) taught to aviation professionals to understand human factors at play when people are involved in dynamic and stressful situations.

How do you put all this together?

Sapiens@work founder Chris van der Walt is himself a student of management and leadership. He is currently a doctoral researcher in leader ship at the Da Vinci Institute, came up with an innovative world-first combination of the practices of positive psychology, aviation human factors facilitation, and executive coaching. Training a fighter pilot involves teaching and training knowledge, skills and attitude. The attitude of a fighter pilot is also known as airmanship.

At Sapiens@work, they have no intention of teaching you the knowledge or the skills to run your business. As with fighter pilots, they have realized that the most important aspect of safe efficient and enjoyable work lies in the attitude of the worker. In the case of aviation, an entire training discipline exists to address just that: the aviation human factors facilitation.

Sapiens@work has seen how attitudes can be shaped, which in turn shapes the culture of the entire organization. How can a single person be trusted with a multimillion dollar airplane, equipped with tremendous fire power and awesome capabilities? How can people continuously perform at a tremendously high level in an unforgiving dangerous and dynamic environment, without losing focus, regard for themselves and their team, but above all remain deeply human? Sapiens@work knows the answers to these questions and they are happy to share them with you in an intellectually generous and cognitively robust manner.
