Bloemfontein school soccer tournament makes BIG return─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 06:16 Sat, 25 Jun 2022
Brebner High School’s under 15/17 soccer tournament, sponsored by Nedbank, is this weekend making a big return to the ‘City of Roses’ following a forced two-year hiatus.
Tournament director and sports coordinator at the Bloemfontein school, Lee-Sheldon Bateman, says the number of teams participating in the tournament presently stand at 40 – the most the tournament has ever recorded.
Kicking off on 25 July and running until 27 June, the tournament has managed to not only attract teams from the Free State, but also from the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and Gauteng provinces.
Bateman says he encountered some challenges in organising the event, but eventually things fell into place.
“For one, many teams withdrew from the tournament, with the most recent one doing so owing to a positive Covid-19 test result from one of the players. This has meant that there are more local teams than initially anticipated, which is also good news.”
Bateman says members of the public can come and support, with no entry cost charged.
The local tuckshop will be open for the purchasing of refreshments.
