A former AfriForum employee in Bloemfontein, Pieter Hendrik (Pieta) Myburg, was found guilty by the Bloemfontein Regional Court and sentenced for fraud and defeating the ends of justice.
Myburg received a sentence of eight years imprisonment, wholly suspended for 5 years, with 36 months of correctional supervision for defrauding AfriForum. As a result of the fraudulent activities AfriForum was prejudiced and suffered a loss of more than R1 million.
According to a statement, the suspect was ordered by the Bloemfontein Regional Court on Tuesday to repay AfriForum R720 000, at a monthly installment of R12 000 over a period of five years. The fraud took place between January 2016 and January 2018.
Kallie Kriel, the Chief Executive Officer of AfriForum, told OFM News that he welcomes the sentence against Myburg as they have a zero tolerance against corruption.
