Buildings to be left in the dark─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 12:19 Thu, 26 May 2022
The Mangaung Metro Municipality's power utility, Centlec, aims to again disconnect the power supply of customers that have defaulted on paying for their services.
Centlec’s spokesperson, Lele Mamatu, explains this will involve both private and public sector institutions in the Mangaung, Mohokare, and Kopanong local municipalities.
Centlec at the beginning of the year reached an agreement with the Free State Provincial Government whereby R90 million would be paid monthly to try and settle its debt, which was in excess of R200 million at the time.

Mamatu further explained it was during the 2021/2022 financial year when the executive management of the power utility started to conduct meter auditing in all areas where they supply electricity.
The meter auditing included all Centlec’s customers, and it resulted in an ongoing process of disconnecting all those who have been defaulting payments.
“Only customers with outstanding accounts owing more than 30 days without approved arrangements in place are being disconnected,” he stated.
Cutting off electricity is a credit control process that happens monthly as per the approved Credit Control and Debt Collection Policy, according to Mamatu.
“According to our Credit Control and Debt Collection Policy, all accounts rendered by the entity that are due must be paid on the due date, which is the seventh of every month.”
The cutting off of electricity will be done without prior notice should the customer fail to pay their account within a period of 14 days.
