FS dam levels record a slim drop─── 12:09 Tue, 10 May 2022
The Department of Water and Sanitation’s state of reservoirs report, which was released late last week, is reflecting a water storage of 105.2% in the Free State, a minor dip from the previous week’s 105.9%.
This shows that the rain has subsided and inlands are seemingly beginning to experience dry weather patterns.
According to the department, Bloemfontein Water Supply System, which supplies the capital of the Free State and other surrounding areas, has witnessed a marginal downturn from 102.4% to 100.6%.
Bloemfontein Courant reports Rustfontein Dam and Groothoek Dam feeding Bloemfontein, is sitting at 101.0% and 98.9% respectively. Welbedacht Dam has recorded 100% and Knellpoort Dam has decreased slightly sitting at 100.5% from the previous week’s 101.5% water capacity.
Sterkfontein Dam stands at 102% at the moment, therefore water had been released in order to bring it down to 101%. It is important to note that the release of this water will take place over a period of about 28 days.
Bloemhof Dam is at 103.1%, this is a reduction from the previous week’s 107.8%. Allemanskraal Dam is at 100.3%, while Erfenis Dam is still at 102.9 %.
Tierpoort Dam also recorded a decrease, and stands at 101.6% from the previous week’s 109.2%. Kalkfontein Dam is at 103.8%. Krugersdrift Dam recorded a decrease at 103.1% and Metsi-Matsho Dam is sitting at 102.9%, while Fika-Patso Dam is at 100%, which is the same as the previous week’s recording.
The great Gariep Dam recorded an increase at 106.0% % from the previous week’s 104.9%, while Vanderkloof Dam is at 106.8%, indicating an increase from last week’s recording of 105.8%.
The Department of Water and Sanitation will continue to monitor all dams and release water where necessary to relieve pressure off the dams, thus ensuring safety of those living downstream.
