The Northern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works has laid out plans to reopen the R31 road, which was closed this past week due to flooding.

The department had closed the R31 between the Homevale interception and Barkly West, after the road was flooded this past week.

Roads and Public Works spokesperson in the Northern Cape, Crystal Robertson, confirmed the commitment of the department in opening the road as soon as possible.

She said the department hopes to open the road over the weekend, as announced by Transport MEC in the Northern Cape, Fufe Makatong.

She said that the Department will communicate with the public regarding the opening of the road.

"Currently rock filling is still ongoing on site. We will communicate with the public our readiness to open the road in order to allow the public to plan their traveling this weekend. Upon opening of the road, motorists will be able to pass through a stop and go traffic control system. The lane on the side of Platfontein will have a safe gravel surface” adds Robertson.

She said this temporary gravel surface forms part of the initial project scope to raise the low laying area with 1.5 meters.

"Prior to the flooding some of the culverts have already been inserted on the one side of the road," she concluded.
