The Free State Provincial Legislature will on Tuesday be in the spotlight as the speaker will be tabling her budget speech.
The powers and privileges of the House, led by speaker Zanele Sifuba, will be under scrutiny following recent events which include visits to the province by at least 24 national ministers. Sifuba will be expected to address the powers possessed by lawmakers, which include the members of the provincial executive council (MECs) with most of the departments and municipalities facing challenges in service delivery. Sifuba will also address the legislature’s performance in law-making and passing of legislation.
Recently, the legislature had the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) sitting where the NCOP held a five-day oversight visit to inspect the water and sanitation issues. Today, Sifuba will table her budget speech which will coincide with the budget tabling of the Premier's Office and Treasury.
The three budgets are the final budgets to be tabled on Tuesday, following a series of budgets presented in the legislature by MECs of various departments, including Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Health, and Education, among others.
Millions of rands were allocated to various programmes which are aimed at accelerating service delivery to communities in the province.
