Four injured in accident on closed #R30 road in Free State | News Article

Yet another accident has occurred, even after the road has been closed, on what has now become known as the notorious #R30 road between Allanridge and Welkom in the Free State.

Four people were injured Thursday night after their vehicle hit a sand barrier used to prevent motorists from using the flooded road. According to the ambulance services 1life911 EMC's Facebook page, some motorists were still seen driving through the water-logged area.

OFM News previously reported that the provincial Department of Police, Roads and Transport, William Bulwane, finally closed this road after a family of four, hailing from the Eastern Cape heading to Orkney in the North West, died early on Monday morning.

As happened with so many others before, the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the gravel section of the road and plunged into the water on both sides of the road. Accidents here have led to the deaths of 15 people since late January 2022. The department said that the R30 has been flooded several times during the recent rainy season and despite repairs done, these fatal accidents persist.

Authorities say numerous drivers have lost control of their vehicles once they hit the gravel portion at high speeds, ending up submerged in the water.
