South Africa’s first air badminton festival held in Kimberley this weekend was a resounding success - with rain and all.

The chairman of the Northern Cape Badminton Association, Phillip Opperman, tells OFM News that local businesses showed their support for the inaugural Kalahari AirBadminton Open tournament which kicked off on Friday and concluded on Saturday.

Opperman says 25 people from Gauteng, the Free State and other parts of the country partook in the tournament on the final day.

He gets into what air badminton is and why it is ideal for development projects.

According to Opperman the World Badminton Federation (BWF) came up with the outdoor version of the game in 2019. He says setting up is quick and easy and therefore makes it possible for one to take the game to rural areas and schools without facilities.

The World Badminton Federation (BWF) echoes Opperman’s sentiment stating on their website that “outdoor badminton is a new project of the federation that aims to create opportunities for people of all ages, income groups and levels of competence to play the game on almost any type of outdoor surface.

"These include land, grass, sand, parks, gardens, streets, playgrounds and beaches. People with disabilities can also participate”.

The chairman of the Northern Cape Badminton Association, says this is just the beginning for the tournament.
