A Free State teacher has been suspended with immediate effect following alleged violence.

MEC for Education, Tate Makgoe, says the teacher was suspended pending an investigation into his alleged conduct.

In a statement, Makgoe said he noted with concern a video that did the rounds on social media depicting the said teacher violently pushing a learner at Wessel Maree Secondary School in Odendaalsrus.

Makgoe says they condemn in the strongest terms possible acts of violence, bullying, corporal punishment and racism across schools.

"Schools should be a centre of learning and conducive to the delivery of quality education.

"Together with all our stakeholders, we have developed a plan to tackle these challenges in our schools across the province, and in Lejweleputswa District in particular, where the incident is alleged to have taken place," he adds.

He says at this stage they don't know the details, but the teacher had been suspended.

"There are rogues who may want to use this incident to fan racial tensions. Our people must guard against such people. We must work together for the good of our learners and must not allow opportunists to drive a wedge between ourselves,” Makgoe further adds.
