Potholes: Community takes matters into own hands─── 17:43 Wed, 23 Feb 2022
Community members from Soutpan, in the Free State, have decided to fix the road leading into their town.
Speaking to OFM News, volunteer Solly Martins says it is not as much about the road, as it is an effort to safeguard the lives of road users.
Martins says many people make use of this extremely damaged road, which motivated them to repair it as best as possible.
He adds heavy rainfall the last couple of months left roads in an even worse condition.
Martins says they now have a request for motorists.
“Some motorists drive really fast and they go over these potholes; not even adhering to the type of signals or the road signs. But we are doing this daily. So we are pleading with them to be aware that between Bloemfontein and Bultfontein there are potholes that volunteers are working on - so they must please be on the lookout.”
He says that some of them have managed to get reflectors to use when they are repairing the roads in the early hours of the morning or late in the evening. This equipment and resources are used to warn road users that they are working on the road.
“We want to emphasise that we are not construction workers, we are volunteers trying to preserve lives on these roads,” explains Martin.
Martin mentions that they will be working until next week to repair the largest potholes.
He says that they, as a community, make use of the roads on a daily basis - which encouraged them to fix whatever and wherever they can as the roads threaten their safety.
“They are really in a bad state,” Martin ends.
