Residents of Ward 1 in Shuping in Bloemfontein have called for calm following an alleged staged attack on their councillor.

It is alleged that this ward councillor was attacked by residents of Hostel 1 who threw faeces outside his house. Residents of Shuping claim that the residents of Hostel 1 allegedly want the previous councillor to be reappointed.

One of the residents who stood outside the councillor’s house, Themba Phillips, said residents should solve issues they have with the current councillor in a peaceful manner rather than stage such attacks. Themba has called on relevant officials to intervene and end attacks that have caused divisions amongst community members.

“I came here to intervene and try to calm down the situation between residents of Shuping and Hostel 1. I told them this is not the way to resolve issues that they have, because our children will be caught in the middle of this unnecessary feud that erupted between residents,” he added.

OFM News reported that scores of Hostel 1 residents barricaded the Dr Belcher Road with burning tyres on Friday morning. Water, sanitation and housing are some of the issues that were raised. Meanwhile, Phillips said relevant government representatives should intervene and ensure a solution that will end these attacks.
