The contributions of women to food production are highly significant and it empowers them, showing the world that a woman can do a man's job and take on roles in society that were traditionally fulfilled by men only.

OFM News spoke to two influential women in the South African agricultural sector, namely Sybil Visagie and Susan Roberts. Visagie, who is a co-farmer in her family's farming business in the Northern Cape Province, says being a woman in the agricultural sector comes with many challenges. Visagie says a woman is the bearer of life, so it is much more emotional to see your flock of sheep under stress because of malnutrition. It is very challenging to make an economical decision when it's an emotional one, but in the end, the female farmers of South Africa are quite capable to make the right decision and are motivated to add to the food basket of South Africa.

"The best part of being a woman in the agricultural sector is seeing and experiencing growth, to nurture your heart and seeing the results, saving a little lamb during a cold night. Women tend to work well in a team, so respectful relationships between employee and employer come easy and add to the productivity on farms," says Visagie.

Susan Roberts, group marketing manager at VKB Agri Processors, says there are many different career opportunities for women in the agricultural sector where women can learn, grow and be successful. Roberts says agriculture is a diverse sector where women can apply themselves and add value towards the growth of the industry. Roberts further adds that the best part of the sector is to learn new things every day.

"My message to all women in Central South Africa is to be true to yourself and accept yourself for who you are. Never allow your gender to determine your path. We as women can do anything we set our minds to and overcome all challenges we face," Roberts says.

Women’s Month is a tribute to the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956, in protest against the extension of Pass Laws.

This historic march was a turning point in the role of women during the struggle for freedom.
