The case against a 28-year-old North West mother accused of killing her one-month-old baby is expected to resume in court on Monday.

The 28-year-old Miemie Mokoena’s case was postponed by the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate's Court over a week ago for a formal bail application. She is alleged to have murdered her baby and abandoned her body in a river.

The National Prosecuting Authority's provincial spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, says it is alleged Mokoena called the police to her home in Itsoseng phase 2, near Hebron, on June 26 and registered a case of kidnapping. She allegedly told the police that two men armed with a knife and a firearm accosted her at her shack and took her baby away. The suspect were allegedly looking for her boyfriend.

Mamothame, in a statement, said preliminary police reports revealed that a young girl walking past a small river in Hebron spotted a lifeless body of an infant floating in the water. She then reported the matter to members of the community, who later alerted the police. He said the police then went to interrogate Mokoena who then confessed to committing the crime. She is facing charges of murder, perjury and defeating the ends of justice.
