Heidedal community seeks solutions after teen’s killing─── 13:02 Wed, 19 May 2021
Following the death of Heidedal local in Bloemfontein, 14-year-old, Liam Siegal, who was shot and killed during a Mangaung Shutdown protest, many outraged community members are motivated to use his death as a wake-up call.
In an interview with OFM News, Chairperson of the Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) in Heidedal, Benjamin Williams, says they have decided to have a community meeting where all political parties, residents, shop owners, and Christian leaders come together in an effort to address their problems peacefully. Williams says the goal of the meeting is to find healing and to find solutions for the social ills in the community. Williams further emphasises that through unity, leaders, and people from different backgrounds coming together, the community can experience a change in favor of the youth.
Deputy Chairperson of the organisation, Willie Jansen, says their plan is to save the Heidedal community and make it a better and safer place for the youth. He further says that regardless of race, they want to bring leaders together and people from different backgrounds to create unity and improve living conditions for the youth’s future. Williams goes on to say that Siegal's death should not be for nothing, and should bring jobs, housing development, and empowerment.
