#GBV in Free State concerns EFF─── LUCKY NKUYANE 08:05 Tue, 11 May 2021
The EFF in the Free State has raised its concern with the scourge of gender-based violence (GBV) across the province.
The EFF's provincial chairperson, Mandisa Makesini, says the party has noticed that the province features prominently on the police ministry's red flag crime statistics. She says these incidents have been experienced mainly in three different areas in the province, which includes Matjhabeng in Welkom, Botshabelo, and Qwaqwa, amongst others.
Makesini has further criticised the law enforcement agencies, including the police and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), for allegedly failing to put more effort to curb the scourge. The statement comes ahead of the court appearance of Mackenzie Ratselane, who is the estranged husband of the SABC News presenter.
Ratselane is facing multiple charges, including kidnapping, assault, and attempted murder, after he was nabbed in Gauteng for attacking and stabbing Dimakatso multiple times in Bloemfontein.
The EFF and other political parties, such as the ANC, and social movements such as the Progressive Professional's Forum (PPF), have been picketing outside the court on multiple occasions in protest against the latter. They have called for a harsher sentence against the latter to deter the would-be offenders.
