UPDATE: Unrest on N1 near Winburg─── 05:21 Fri, 16 Apr 2021
The disgruntled residents of Makeleketla in Winburg in the Free State took their grievances to the streets on Thursday evening.
They barricaded the N1 and Makeleketla Road with the burning tyres, stones, and branches.
During the unrest, a stationary truck was torched, and fortunately, no-one was injured as the passengers managed to escape.
Their discontent comes after the decision taken by the provincial government that an upcoming visit of president Cyril Ramaphosa will no longer be in Winburg. The statement has indicated that the new venue for the presidential visit will now be in Botshabelo, near Bloemfontein.
Among the reasons why the venue of the presidential visit has been changed is that there's an alleged high shortage of water in Winburg and the community members could use the event as an opportunity to protest.
However, residents say they won't stop protesting until the change of venue is cancelled. They say they want to talk to the president about the challenges they face daily.
UPDATE: At least five people have been arrested this morning in the chaos that is taking place in Winburg in the Free State. According to one of the officials who are on the scene, the road users who are travelling from Bloemfontein to Johannesburg should use the R30 road.
This, after the unrest started again in the early hours of Friday, where the N1 and Makeleketla Road is being barricaded with the burning tyres, stones, and the branches of the trees.
