NC Health HOD out on R30k bail | News Article

The Head of the Department (HOD) of Health in the Northern Cape has been granted R30 000 bail after he made his first appearance at the Kimberley Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The 54-year-old Dion Theys was nabbed by the Hawks on charges related to the contravention of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

Hawks provincial spokesperson, Nomthandoza Mnisi, tells OFM News that Theys' case was postponed to March 24. She says it is alleged that during March 2014, the Acting HOD signed three lease agreements with JP Hugo Residence for nursing accommodation, without following normal procurement processes.

Mnisi adds that the total cost of these lease agreements is approximately R96 million.

"The Provincial Head of the Northern Cape Hawks lauded the members and indicated that even though such investigations prove to be complicated, his members will ensure that the law triumphs in the end," she further adds.

OFM News in 2020 reported that the Hawks in the Northern Cape arrested suspects for their alleged involvement in a near R10 million fraud scandal that rocked the provincial Health Department.

Mnisi at the time told OFM News that the suspects included the project manager of the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in Kimberley. She also said the alleged fraud dates back to a 2014 multi-regional renovation project.

According to Mnisi, in 2014 the Northern Cape Department of Health awarded contracts for the renovation of various hospitals across the province.

“Those contracts were awarded to various business entities, whose directors were related.”
