Municipal services in NW’s Madibeng a concern | News Article

Municipal services such as consistent water supply, electricity and maintenance of sanitation are non-existent in Brits in the North West.

This is according to the DA in the province. The party’s Ronelle Gous says they are now appealing to Madibeng Municipality’s Acting Manager, Noko Seanego, to intervene and devise a service delivery recovery plan. Gous, in a statement, highlights how residents and businesses are forced to endure raw sewage flowing into streets and into their homes. She says the lack of infrastructure maintenance by this municipality exposes residents to health risks at the time when the country is also grappling with the spread of the coronavirus. Gous says the time has come for the Madibeng Municipality to improve service delivery.

OFM News has previously reported on how the Madibeng Local Municipality is amongst the four North West municipalities that have invested more than R314 million of taxpayers’ money with the now liquidated VBS Mutual Bank.

The municipality is also amongst those cited in the Auditor-General report as those still crippled by the VBS investments and is still battling to provide services to its residents.

A report titled "The Great Bank Heist" by advocate Terry Motau, has illustrated how billions were looted from the bank and how municipalities’ investments with the bank were contrary to the Municipal Financial Management Act (MFMA), as VBS Mutual Bank was not registered as a bank in terms of the Banks Act.

It was found that the Madibeng Local Municipality invested R31 million of their conditional grant,  while the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality invested R150 million, the Moretele Local Municipality invested R50 million from their water services infrastructure grant and the Mahikeng Municipality, invested over R83 million.

Meanwhile, the party maintains “it is unacceptable that residents pay for rates and services yet they do not receive any services from the municipality. The MM must draw up a plan to fix the situation” said Gous.
