NC municipal council officially dissolved─── MARVIN NTSANE 15:34 Mon, 07 Sep 2020
The municipal council of the Renosterberg Local Municipality in the Northern Cape has officially been dissolved.
The decision was live-streamed by the provincial premier, Zamani Saul, and MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA), Bentley Vassis, on Monday.
This comes as an intervention aimed to resuscitate the dilapidated state of service delivery in this municipality, which includes the town of Vanderkloof and Lukhanyisweni, amongst others.
During the address, Saul stated that the municipality has been failing to provide running water, electricity, refuse removal, and sanitation to its poor community members for the past seven years. It is also reported, among others, that this municipality owes Eskom close to R89 million.
Saul added that the municipality will undergo a financial recovery plan and an administrator will be appointed until a new Municipal Council has been elected. He stated the Coghsta MEC, Vassis, and Finance MEC, Maruping Lekwene, will be out carrying the intervention programmes in the meantime.
