Parents at Fauna Primary School in Bloemfontein have taken to the streets to make their voices heard.

The group of parents and guardians who gathered outside the school this morning as schools countrywide re-open following a 4 week-break announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus, says they are unhappy with the school management.

A lack of social distancing at the school, as well as scholar transport and the firing of SGB teachers are amongst the issues sharply raised by parents. One of the parents, who would like to remain anonymous in fear of intimidation, tells OFM News they demand the school headmaster to vacate office as, in their view, she fails to prioritise their children.

"We have a number of issues. We want the principal to be suspended with immediate effect pending investigations. There are 14 teachers who have been laid off without any valid reason. The buses are also an issue. The principal wants to outsource the buses, which is going to be a problem for many parents as it will place a financial burden on many parents."

One of the parents, Maleho Motlhale, added that cleaners at the school have also been fired, which poses a health risk amidst the Covid-19 pandemic as more and more learners are now returning to school.
