Macufe to make a comeback─── CATHY DLODLO 07:31 Thu, 30 Jul 2020
The controversial flagship program of the Free State Department for Sports, Arts and Culture – the Mangaung Arts and Culture Festival (Macufe) is going to make a comeback.
This follows after it was cancelled this year as part of the province's fight against the Covid19 pandemic.
Free State Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Limakatso Mahasa, announced during the tabling of her adjustment budget that Macufe is set to return next year.
This multi million rand festival has been shrouded in controversy. Local artists have been complaining about not being paid enough compared to national and international attractions.
Some were not paid for months after the festival ended.
Opposition parties in the Free State insisted that the initial idea behind the festival was that it was supposed to be financially self-sustainable, but since its launch in 1997 more money was pumped into it from state coffers.
In the latest development the Auditor- General found that proper tender procedures were not followed with the re- appointment of the company that has been organising the festival for years.
Contractual terms and conditions were also not clear on what was to happen to the revenue from tickets of the music events.
