NW Nehawu mourns member─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:20 Sat, 18 Jul 2020
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) in the North West vows to intensify its efforts in the fight against poor health services.
Passing condolences to the family and friends of Deputy Provincial Secretary, Toffies Moemi, the union says they are committed to fight against 'slave wages and unfavourable working conditions’.
The union’s North West Provincial Secretary, Patrick Makhafane, in a statement, says it is with great shock and sadness that the union mourns the passing of Moemi and that he will be greatly missed.
Makhafane says Moemi played a critical role in ensuring that the rights of workers were protected and that they will honour his memory by continuing to do so.
“As Nehawu, we dip our banner in honour of this fallen, dedicated cadre of our movement, a revolutionary and an unassuming leader who served and led Nehawu unconditionally,” he said.
Moemi started as a shop steward and rose up the ranks within the union.
He was elected as the union's deputy provincial secretary in the North West in 2017.
Makhafane described Moemi as a leader who was passionate and humbled about his contribution to the struggles of the working class.
He says his contribution to the economic, social and political transformation communities will always be remembered.
“His passing takes place while the entire world is fighting the novel coronavirus which has caused unprecedented damages to the economy coupled with an unacceptable number of deaths, job losses, and loss of personal income of millions of our people. In honour of Cde Toffies, Nehawu in the North West province commits to agitate and fight for an even more improved healthcare system and the speedy implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI),” said Makhafane.
Moemi’s burial details are yet to be communicated by his family.
