Another incident of public unrest has broken out in Maluti-A-Phofung in Qwaqwa with some of the irate residents reportedly barricading roads with stones and burning tyres.

The municipal spokesperson, Morena Ntsane Morapedi, confirms to OFM News that the municipality is aware of the situation and stakeholders, including the police, are attending to the situation. The cash-strapped municipality has been troubled for a while now with calls from residents who allege there is a serious lack of service delivery, including water, in that area. OFM News in January reported that disgruntled residents in the area took to the streets demanding water after the death of an eight-year-old girl who drowned while fetching water from a river. Residents are allegedly demanding the electricity and constant water supply.

This comes weeks after the Water and Sanitation Department promised to send more water tanks to the embattled municipality. This department earlier vowed to ensure the installation of 5 000 water tanks to alleviate the water crisis experienced in the region. The promise was made following sporadic protests of similar nature. Minister Lindiwe Sisulu then announced that the Department’s intervention would be an allocation of R220 million and 5 000 water tankers to address the situation.
