#BreakingNews: Man dies at Maseru border | News Article

A foreign national in his sixties this morning fell to his death at the border of Maseru between Free State and Lesotho.

Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says the deceased fell on the ground while standing in the queue from South Africa to Lesotho. He says according to a clinic card found in his pocket, he was due to see a doctor on Tuesday 24 March 2020. He adds that the elderly man was certified dead on the scene by Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Makhele adds the police have opened an inquest.

Maseru is one of the few borders between South Africa and Lesotho, which remain busy with the movement and activity of people amidst the spread of the coronavirus disease in South Africa.

Last week, Home Affairs Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi, closed 35 of the 53 land borders. He said it is done "to protect ourselves and to protect our neighbours from us. We have the highest numbers of infections in the SADC region".

So far nine border posts between Lesotho and South Africa have been closed.

These include Ramatsiliso gate, Ongeluksnek, Telle Bridge, Makhaleng Bridge, Peka Gate, Monantsa pass, Sepapus gate, Sani pass, and Boesmansnek /Ngoangoana. So far Lesotho remains coronavirus free while its neighbouring country, South Africa, has 554 confirmed cases. The Free State, which shares most of the borders with Lesotho, has 18 confirmed cases as announced by Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, this morning 24 March 2020.
