Former Northern Cape Education MEC, Archie Gomolemo Lucas, is today being laid to rest in Kimberley.

He will receive a Special Provincial Official Funeral after President Cyril Ramaphosa has granted the province permission for a category 2 special funeral. Lucas died at the Mediclinic Gariep Hospital in Kimberley last week Friday. All flags at government buildings are flying at half-mast.

The Premier of the province, Zamani Saul, and ANC top brass have expressed their condolences to the former MEC’s family and friends. During the ANC January 8 celebrations in Kimberley, he was described as a leader who made tremendous contributions in the province and the country at large. Saul, who is also expected to give a keynote address at Lucas’ burial, held at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre, described him as someone who was dedicated to his work and who put the interest of those he served first. Saul expressed his gratitude over Lucas’ achievements and said his legacy will live on.
