Embattled Setsoto mayor in Ficksburg reportedly resigns | News Article

A resignation letter of the troubled Setsoto Local Municipal mayor, Nthateng Maoke, currently doing rounds on Social media, cannot be confirmed nor denied by the municipality.

The Municipal Manager(MM), Tshepiso Ramakarane, tells OFM News that he cannot comment on the letter nor speak on the authenticity of it. He adds that the council in Ficksburg in the Free State will have a sitting tomorrow where all will be revealed.

In a letter dated Wednesday, December addressed to the council speaker, Krog Mokuane, indicates that the mayor Maoke has resigned with immediate effect but does not say the reasons for her prompt decision to excuse herself as mayor.

Maoke recently made headlines following allegations of her fraudulent South African Identity Document (ID) and an investigation by HomeAffairs into allegations that she is an illegal immigrant from the neighbouring country of Lesotho.

OFM News previously reported that the Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) in the Municipality opened a case against Maoke and further demanded that she pay back the money she received since being in the office as the mayor.

The EFF provincial Secretary, Shadrack Diko, told OFM News that during a council meeting on Thursday 12 December, to address issues around Maoke, members of the ruling ANC refused to discuss the matter, stating that it is being handled by the court.

OFM News recently reported that provincial Home Affairs officials went to the municipal offices in search of Maoke, but did not find her.

Ramarakane, earlier confirmed and said that he was aware of issues regarding Maoke’s citizenship but argued that it was not within their mandate, as the municipality, to object or even comment.

The spokesperson of the Provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Zolile Lobe, said the investigation into Maoke’s citizenship followed after complaints were raised about her identity documents.
