Maboloka traditional leadership protests: NW police rescue three─── 11:10 Fri, 30 Aug 2019
Three people were rescued from a raging mob in Maboloka near Brits on Thursday, North West police said.
Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the house of David Tsajoa, a traditional leader in Maboloka, was pelted with stones and petrol bombs in the early hours of Thursday.
"At the time of the incident, guards were posted to safeguard the place. The incident is allegedly linked to a refusal by some members of the community to accept the court ruling that Kgosi Tsajoa is the rightful chief of Maboloka."
The North West High Court last week ruled in favour of Tsajoa who had waged a court battle with Emmanuel Lion over the traditional leadership of Bataung-ba-Hlalele in Maboloka.
A case of malicious damage to property was opened.
"The police were pelted with stones by members of the community while visiting the scene at approximately 7am. At that stage, roads were barricaded with various objects.
"It was after reinforcements that three people, who were kidnapped and assaulted, were rescued."
The local tribal office and clinic were not opened. Learning was also affected as learners did not go to school.
He said the situation was relatively calm in the afternoon and that the police were maintaining a presence in the area.
